๐ŸŒฟ Introduction โ€“ Why Ranthambore?

Spread over 1,334 kmยฒ of dry deciduous forests, grasslands and lakes, Ranthambore National Park is India's most filmed tiger reserve. Unlike dense evergreen forests, its open terrain offers year-round tiger sightings, making it ideal for first-time wildlife travellers and professional photographers alike.

The park is named after the 10th-century Ranthambore Fort (UNESCO World Heritage Site) which forms the core of the reserve. Tigers here have become so accustomed to vehicles that mothers often parade cubs on jeep tracksโ€” a behaviour rarely seen elsewhere.

๐Ÿ“œ From Royal Hunting Ground to Tiger Haven

Established as the Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary in 1955, Ranthambore was declared a Project Tiger reserve in 1973. By 1980 it became a national park and in 1991 the adjoining Keladevi & Sawai Man Singh sanctuaries were merged to create today's vast landscape.

๐Ÿ—บ Safari Zones โ€“ Where to Go?

The park is divided into 10 eco-tourism zones. Zones 1-5 are core; 6-10 are buffer but equally rich. Entry gates differ and each zone has unique topography:

  • Zone 1-3: Lakes, dhok groves โ€“ favourite of โ€œNoorโ€ & โ€œArrow-headโ€ lineages.
  • Zone 4 (Singh Dwar): Most photographed tigress โ€œMachliโ€ territory; high cub sighting.
  • Zone 6-8: Open grasslands, ideal for birding & leopard sightings.
  • Zone 9-10: Riverine valleys; less crowded, excellent for filmmakers.
